Following Jesus is risky. People try to convince you that when you become a Christian, life will be easier, but that’s not true. Let me tell you, life is infinitely better with Jesus, but not always more comfortable. It’s risky, and taking risks require guts.
For a little insight into such a loaded statement, these past few years have been one for the books. There have been insane mountain tops and low valleys. I have worked challenging jobs, moved across the country, launched a magazine, closed the doors of a dream, had a major surgery, and jumped into self-employment in the span of 18 months.
These challenges came from seeking God’s guidance and obeying what I felt was His “next step” for me. Sometimes, these steps yielded immediate joy. Sometimes, they generated desperation amidst the unexpected challenges in situations I thought was the right thing.
Needless to say, there have been scary moments, plenty of questions, and a plethora of tears.
But guess what, God has always proved to be incredibly faithful in the midst of those challenges. In this season, I learned just how safe risk-taking could be. Our paradigms get flipped upside down when we realize that obedience to God yields more life-giving results and joy than the estimated safe route to success and happiness.
I have seen time and time again, that with Him, I walk right into my destiny, which yields more fullness than I could ever dream and makes the challenges worth it. I mean, Scripture already tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. And believe me, I understand that God is not a vending machine and this does not guarantee overnight mansions and swimming pools of lollipops. But it does give me hope in challenging times that God does, in fact, have my best interest in mind. And yours too.
There is joy in following God’s lead step-by-step. It may not always look like the most conventional route. But I promise it is rewarding.
The risk is worth it y’all. I promise you that.
